Vote for Problem Solver

To the Editor:

Deciding on and voting for candidates of your choice are hallmarks of our democracy. The arrival of Labor Day suggests we in Harvey Cedars are coming close to decision time. All three of our commissioner spots are up for grabs. Our incumbents, Mayor Jon Oldham, Deputy Mayor John Imperiale and Commissioner Paul Rice, have done an outstanding job.

My gut tells me our commissioners are cut from a very different cloth than the pols who inhabit the county, state and federal-level, government offices. They are and have been hard-working, competent and, more importantly, good people whose only consideration has been “What can I do to make HC a better place?” – a difficult task since it’s already a great place.

My purpose in writing this letter is to endorse Deputy Mayor John Imperiale and ask Harvey Cedars voters to vote for him again as one of our three commissioners. I know John as a friend, as a writer, and my golf buddy. Together we have endured many frustrating hours, hitting then hunting for that golf ball around many acres of grass and woods. In between strokes we sometimes debate his latest opinion column in The SandPaper. To be sure, we generally agree on most things related to golf and maybe not a lot regarding national policy.

So, why am I asking you to endorse a candidate who doesn’t see eye to eye with me on some of the issues impacting our country? It isn’t based on his golf game, or his excellent writing skills, or his take on national policies.

John, I suggest, is a problem solver, not a problem maker. He is intelligent and capable. He is trustworthy. He is a compassionate soul, and passionate in his beliefs. And most importantly, he has worked, and will continue to work, diligently with whoever is elected with him to do whatever is necessary to make HC an even better place for all our residents.

Mark my words, your vote for Deputy Mayor John Imperiale will ensure that Harvey Cedars continues to be what it has always been – a stellar community, the star of the New Jersey shore.
